It’s a sunny Idaho day in 1970 at the Sun Valley Depot. The “Snowball Special” has just arrived, its passengers—eager skiers from Los Angeles—stepping off the train into the crisp mountain air. Transfer buses await, ready to shuttle them the final stretch to the Sun Valley Lodge. Excitement buzzes in the air as ski gear is unloaded, laughter echoing against the snow-dusted peaks. For these winter adventurers, it marks the beginning of a weeklong escape of carving down Bald Mountain’s legendary slopes, warming up by lodge fireplaces, and soaking in everything that Sun Valley’s alpine charm has to offer. | ||||||||

| The Southern Pacific Coast Mail train #71, that left Los Angeles on time at 0710 this morning, is speeding toward San Francisco. The usual 13 hour and 45 minute trip is a little behind schedule today. The Coast Mail train, the adventurous young lady on the classic Indian motorcycle and the two Stearman Kaydet biplanes are all “Racing Daylight”. | ||||||||

| The Spirit Locomotive No.1943 honors our U.S. armed forces as it glides through Echo Canyon, Utah. Each branch of service is reflected on the locomotive starting up front with the silver cab, symbolic of the Air Force, with the blue “nose sash” reprsenting the former Strategic Air Command. Next the “Racing Stripe” from the Coast Guard, and the Battleship Gray framing Union Pacific’s traditional U.S. flag. The camouflage reflects our Army and Marines, followed by the POW/MIA logo, showing our prisoners of war and those missing in action, that they are not forgotten. | ||||||||

| On a cool afternoon in 1947, this 2903 is due to be vacated or retired from the active roster. Built in 1920, this Baldwin, Heavy Pacific type 4-6-2 steam locomotive pulled freight and passenger trains through the heat and rain of the summers, the snow and cold of the winters for a span of over 27 years. Now tired and worn out, her fate awaits her as the outdated steam engines are being replaced with new diesel powered locomotives.. | ||||||||

| The East bound North Coast Limited arrives at Livingston on time from Seattle. After changing the head power and using the wash racks to clean the dome car windows, the train is ready to depart for St Paul in just 10 minutes. | ||||||||

| The painting depicts "A Moment in Time" that was seen in train depots across the country in the war era. This picture takes place in the Scranton Pennsylvania depot, as the Lackawanna passenger train known as the "Phoebe Snow" prepares to depart for Chicago, travelers go about there way while a soldier embassies the one he loves. | ||||||||
