This 4-4-0 steam engine, number 815, was rebuilt in march of 1886 and is the only steam locomotive ever built in the state of Wyoming. After the rebuilds completion, it was considered to be a new locomotive and the shop forces affectionately referred to her as “Big Jumbo”. Here she poses on the turntable at the Evanston Roundhouse in 1901 awaiting the next assignment.
"The Pride of Evanston" Original Acrylic 24x36 |
||||||||
This 0-6-0 steam locomotive number 4420, was built in 1914 and served as a switch engine its entire career. During its’ final years it was assigned to Evanston Wyoming and was taken out of service in August of 1957. It was officially retired by Union Pacific in May of 1958. and donated to the city of Evanston in June of that year where is was placed on display at the Uinta County Courthouse in July of 1958. In 1981 it was moved for display to the Railroad Park at the north end of the city. In December of 2020, it was once again moved to the Evanston Roundhouse where it is now being restored to running status. Here it is depicted preforming switching duties, shoving a new P.F.E. car with a busted coupler/draw-bar assembly, into the west end of the roundhouse where some car repairs were often done. This scene is set in July of 1957.

"The Spirit of Honor" Original Acrylic 18x24 |
||||||||
The Spirit Locomotive No.1943 honors our U.S. armed forces as it glides through Echo Canyon, Utah. Each branch of service is reflected on the locomotive starting up front with the silver cab, symbolic of the Air Force, with the blue “nose sash” reprsenting the former Strategic Air Command. Next the “Racing Stripe” from the Coast Guard, and the Battleship Gray framing Union Pacific’s traditional U.S. flag. The camouflage reflects our Army and Marines, followed by the POW/MIA logo, showing our prisoners of war and those missing in action, that they are not forgotten.
"The Heavy Pacific" Original Acrylic 12x24 |
||||||||
On a cool afternoon in 1947, this 2903 is due to be vacated or retired from the active roster. Built in 1920, this Baldwin, Heavy Pacific type 4-6-2 steam locomotive pulled freight and passenger trains through the heat and rain of the summers, the snow and cold of the winters for a span of over 27 years. Now tired and worn out, her fate awaits her as the outdated steam engines are being replaced with new diesel powered locomotives..
"Where Giants Roam " Original Acrylic 18x24 |

"Harriman's Dream " Original Acrylic 24x36 |
||||||||
Idaho's Harriman State Park in Island Park, Idaho was originally part of the "Railroad Ranch" established by the Oregon Short Line. In 1908 the owners approached the chairman of Union Pacific Railroad, E. H. Harriman in new York, about buying the "Railroad Ranch". When E. H. Harriman heard of the premium grazing land, amazing waterfowl and unbelievable fishing he purchased the property sight- unseen. The Island Park Land and Cattle company had started grazing cattle in Island Park in the 1890s. Livestock was shipped to the Island Park siding to graze in the spring, then in the fall they were rounded up by horse back, sorted in corrals and shipped by rail to market. Their last round up was the fall of 1971.

After making the climb through Echo Canyon in June of 1976, this Union Pacific 6916 speeds around the curve, eastbound, just miles from Evanston Wyoming. ”Fast Forties” were often placed between two “Centennials” as seen here, to add hauling power to premium freight trains. The “Centennial” 6916 now resides at Union Station in Ogden, Utah.

This scene in Echo Canyon brings out the little boy in all of us, who loves trains and would sit beside the tracks just hoping to hear the roar, smell the smoke and feel the power of a passing locomotive. But most importantly to possibly get a wave from the engineer or a blast of the horn just for him.
"Streamling the Blues " Original Oil/Acrylic 24x48

||||||||
The site of a Union Pacific E-9 streamliner pulling bright yellow passenger cars through this mountainous canyon was my inspiration for this piece. Understanding the hard work involved in building a railroad through the mountains inspires a deep appreciation for the beauty of this train snaking its way through these canyons.

As both engineer and steam locomotive take their run into the sunset, they pass an F-3 diesel locomotive and its engineer, both early in the stages of their careers. The seasoned Hog Head and his old locomotive have logged thousands of miles over the years and as they pass the Covered Wagon he can't help but reminisce about the many trips he and his old Iron Horse have taken.

The streamlined version of the Baltimore & Ohio's, 4-6-2 was an all-coach train that ran from Baltimore to Cincinnati. Although the train boasted of a 95% on-time performance record, its life of service was short lived. This somewhat unusual looking steam engine in its brilliant blue color with black and gold accent, was strikingly beautiful in a snowy backdrop like "The Cincinnatian in Winter"

"Crew Change" Original Oil 16x20
|
||||||||
Train 31 the "Butte Express" stops at Pocatello to change crews and pick up passengers. The train is heading northbound for its remaining 260 mile journey to Butte Montana. As the new crew waits to board the locomotive and inbound crew climbs off their train on a bitter cold January day. The steam mixed with the cold air makes for a scene that jogs the memories of those fortunate enough to have experienced it.

"Elements of Change" sums up this piece of artwork in so many ways. The changing from summer to all the splendors of fall, the changes in behavior and attitude of a bull elk going into rutting season, and the changes that the Central Pacific railroad brought to the western landscape, wildlife and our ability to experience the west.

The romance of traveling by train in all of its glory. Woman in long dresses and parasols, men in top hats and gloves, along with a brightly colored steam locomotive and luxurious passenger car let us reflect on the emotions associated with traveling by train. This scene appeals to a wide variety of people that remember and enjoy the mood of train travel in days gone by.
